Community Champions: Empowering New Yorkers to Advocate for Public Health

By: Sarah Gambell, Senior Healthcare Advertising Professional

Public health awareness campaigns play a crucial role in educating communities about critical health issues. But simply delivering information isn’t enough. To create lasting change, non-profit organizations and county health departments need to empower residents to become advocates for their own health and the health of their communities.

This is where non-profit organizations and county health departments can elevate the messaging. Public health campaigns can leverage a statewide network of trusted voices and deep community connections. These organizations can tailor messaging to resonate with the specific cultural contexts of their communities, while county health departments can provide the latest data and resources. Together, they can lead the way and create creative campaigns that not only raise awareness but also inspire residents to take action and become advocates for public health in their own neighborhoods.

Imagine a campaign that empowers residents to become “health ambassadors” for their counties. With data on how residents in particular neighborhoods consume media, Advance Media New York  can tailor creative messaging that resonates with our community members and serve marketing in the format these individuals are apt to receive.

One such way Advance Media New York has done this is via working with a state government agency to implement a strategic program to connect lower-income households with a crucial nutritional support initiative. By utilizing granular demographic, geographic, and behavioral data, we designed a campaign centered around an animated character that walked the program’s target audience through eligibility and enrollment. The campaign strategy consists of messaging on digital platforms to lower income pregnant women and parents of Infants, toddlers and children under 5 living in New York State. From social media (META) ads, google search ads to TikTok video ads, to YouTube ads– we target the audience on these and other digital platforms throughout their path to conversion.

The campaign expanded program awareness, tackled stigma, and is helping to substantially increase enrollment participation across New York State.

By fostering collaboration between these groups and building creative-driven marketing strategies, public health initiatives can empower everyday New Yorkers to become champions for well-being in their communities.
